WHAT IS EMERGE?
Emerge is a project managed by The Mighty Creatives funded by Spirit of 2012. The project oversees the development of 12 youth led festivals in 12 locations across the East and West Midlands that celebrate, reinvent and demystify the life and work of William Shakespeare. The Corby festival will be supported by The Core at Corby Cube, Made in Corby, Maplefields Academy and young artist Emily York.
The festival is titled Emerge Festival Corby and will take place on Saturday 21st April, 11am-3pm in and around The Core at Corby Cube. The festival will involve tours around The Core at Corby Cube showcasing the work of local young people as well as a procession around town and other performing acts. We aim for the festival to demystify Shakespeare for audiences, with the hope to blur the line between performers and audiences and to encourage them to participate in the arts as a wider experience.
HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?
We are offering two local visual artists the opportunity to run participatory arts activities aimed at young people in a yurt outside The Core at Corby Cube. We would like these activities to be of a drop-in nature, and will run either at 11am-1pm or 1pm-3pm.
The young people we have been working with have suggested activities that make the following: flower crowns, flags, banners, shields, fairy wings and masks. We are open to other activity suggestions, which can be directly or loosely inspired by William Shakespeare. The young people would like the artist to use recycled materials or found objects. Artists will be paid a fee of £170, that includes resources for the activity and travel.
Successful applications will be selected by our Young Voices group in partnership with Made in Corby and the young artist Emily York. Commissioned artists will be expected to attend a planning meeting with festival organisers (date TBC).
